In short, an operating system. This consists of:

• A lightweight, Actor-based framework that will run hosted or standalone on x86 hardware
• A network-transparent storage infrastructure, somewhat like AFS but more flexible
• A network-based zero-configuration system, which propagates machine configuration, the user database and other information across a cell of machines. Together will the network filesystem, a machine's entire state will be specified and stored on the network cell.
• A completely network-transparent operating system/environment

In short, speck7 will be an environment for a new, network-centric age of computing.

speck7 comes, at least in spirit if not in codebase, from the speck lineage. speck was cfallin's operating system effort, mostly in 2002, that aimed to produce the "small, portable, efficiently-coded kernel". That codebase is stagnant now; cfallin was at best an amateur (he was 14 at the time) and the design was fairly conventional. speck7 arises now both as a fresh-start playground for unconventional models of concurrent computing - Actors, based on a coroutine framework - and other interesting ideas. If all works properly, speck7 will serve as the base of all of cfallin's further computing efforts.

This in mind, speck7 originated as a contraction of "speck 2007"; it is a renewal of the 2002 speck effort, half a decade later.

The name speck7 can be shortened to "s7"; in this form, it is pronounced simply as "seven".
